Writ Petition Seeks Ban on Indian TV Channels in Bangladesh

DHAKA: A writ petition was recently filed in the Bangladesh High Court calling for a ban on all Indian TV channels, citing the alleged provocative nature of their broadcasts. Advocate Ekhlas Uddin Bhuiyan, the petitioner, argued that certain content aired on Indian television has adverse effects on Bangladeshi society. A hearing is expected soon before a High Court bench comprising Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Sikder Mahmudur Razi.

The petition raises concerns about the influence of Indian TV shows on social norms, educational engagement, and cultural values in Bangladesh. The petitioner also highlighted that while Indian channels have significant reach in Bangladesh, Bangladeshi channels do not enjoy similar broadcasting rights in India. This disparity has fueled calls for regulatory action.

Indian channels, including Star Plus and Zee Bangla, have previously faced criticism for broadcasting content perceived as incompatible with local cultural values. While such channels are widely popular, critics argue that their influence may be reshaping societal norms in Bangladesh.

This petition is part of an ongoing debate about cultural sovereignty and media influence in South Asia. The verdict could have significant implications for cross-border media consumption and diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and India.

Sambhal Violence Sparks Opposition Protest in Lok Sabha

New Delhi – The Lok Sabha witnessed a brief walkout by the opposition, led by Rahul Gandhi, in protest against the recent violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. The unrest, which escalated during a survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid, has left six dead and dozens injured. Tensions ignited over a court-ordered investigation into claims that the mosque was built on a historic Hindu temple site.

Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav, addressing the issue in Parliament, criticized the government for its handling of the situation, alleging the violence was pre-planned. “People lost their lives due to police mishandling, and false cases are being filed against innocent individuals,” Yadav said, calling for accountability. He highlighted that key figures, including SP MP Zia-ur-Rehman Barq, were named in the FIR despite their absence during the clashes.

The violence erupted on Sunday when a crowd protested the survey, clashing with security personnel, torching vehicles, and pelting stones. Authorities have registered seven FIRs and arrested 25 individuals, while 2,750 unidentified persons remain accused. Police maintain that only tear gas and rubber bullets were used to manage the mob, while some fatalities resulted from rioters firing homemade pistols.

The district remains under heavy police surveillance with internet services suspended and public entry restricted until November 30. Deputy Inspector General Muniraj G confirmed that the situation is under control and assured that innocent individuals would not be penalized. Markets and schools in the district are gradually reopening.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to visit Sambhal today to meet with affected families and assess the situation.

Maharashtra’s New Chief Minister to Be Announced on December 4.. All Eyes on Fadnavis

Mumbai: Maharashtra’s next Chief Minister will be revealed on December 4, the day before the swearing-in ceremony of the Mahayuti government, according to a senior BJP official. The announcement will follow the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) election of its legislature party leader, the official added.

Reports suggest that Devendra Fadnavis has already been finalized as the next Chief Minister. The BJP has appointed Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani as central observers. The two will meet with the elected BJP representatives in Mumbai on December 4 to conduct the election of their leader. Afterward, the chosen candidate’s name will be sent to senior party leaders in Delhi, who will officially announce the new Chief Minister.

State BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule confirmed that the oath-taking ceremony for the Mahayuti government will take place on December 5 at Azad Maidan, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance.

While no official statement has been made, sources suggest Fadnavis is the party’s final choice for the role. Caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has expressed full support for the BJP’s decision, stating that his party will accept the final outcome and will not obstruct the process.

Both Shiv Sena and NCP, key allies in the Mahayuti coalition, are expected to receive the deputy chief minister’s posts in the upcoming government.

Opposition Criticizes RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat’s ‘Three-Children’ Remark, Calls for Personal Choice in Family Planning

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat’s call for couples to have at least three children has sparked sharp criticism from opposition leaders, who argue that such statements disregard personal choice and the nation’s existing challenges. Bhagwat’s remarks, made during a speech in Nagpur, were based on concerns over India’s declining population growth, citing the risks of societal extinction if the fertility rate falls below 2.1.

Opposition leaders have expressed strong disapproval of the suggestion. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Jitendra Awhad questioned the feasibility of Bhagwat’s proposal, pointing out the country’s resource constraints, such as rising inflation and increasing school fees. He emphasized that women, who manage household economics, are best positioned to make family decisions. Awhad further questioned whether the RSS would impose specific family planning choices on citizens, asking if they would dictate having four children.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut took a swipe at Bhagwat, suggesting that if the RSS were genuinely concerned about population growth, it should direct its advice toward BJP members. Raut also accused the RSS of hypocrisy, highlighting contradictions in their policies, including their stance on women’s safety and the potential implementation of a common civil code.

Other opposition leaders, including Asaduddin Owaisi and Tariq Anwar, mocked Bhagwat’s proposal. Owaisi sarcastically asked if the RSS chief would offer financial incentives to couples who comply, while Anwar criticized the inconsistency in the RSS’s stance on population growth and Muslim fertility rates. Anwar suggested that the BJP and RSS should first implement such measures themselves.

In contrast, BJP leaders defended Bhagwat’s comments, insisting that his call for higher birth rates was in the country’s best interest. BJP MP Manoj Tiwari emphasized that the RSS is a patriotic organization and viewed Bhagwat’s statement as a positive contribution to national growth. Similarly, BJP MPs Arun Govil and Dinesh Sharma supported the view that a growing population is essential for India’s development.

Union Minister Chirag Paswan, an ally of the BJP, acknowledged the issue raised by Bhagwat, recognizing it as a technical concern related to fertility rates and national demographics.

Farooq Abdullah Urges Centre to End Actions Fueling Communal Tensions, Calls for Equal Treatment of Muslims

National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Monday called on the Centre to halt actions that could ignite communal tension in India and urged the government to treat Muslims equally. Speaking to reporters, Abdullah questioned, “Where will they throw 24 crore Muslims?” emphasizing the need to uphold the Constitution, which ensures equality for all citizens. He warned that tampering with the Constitution could jeopardize the nation’s survival.

Addressing concerns over the return of Kashmiri Pandits, Abdullah clarified that no one was obstructing their return to the Valley, asserting that all political parties support their resettlement. He reiterated that the decision to return rests with the Pandits themselves, adding that his government had made efforts to bring them back during difficult times.

On the subject of Jammu and Kashmir’s reservation policy, Abdullah supported a review of the current system, which he said aims to uplift underprivileged sections of society. He also highlighted the formation of a Cabinet sub-committee to evaluate the growing demand for reservation rationalization in the Union Territory, which now stands at 70%.

Abdullah also commented on the recent firing of two government employees by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for alleged terrorist links, stating that the government must examine the circumstances surrounding their dismissal.

While discussing international issues, Abdullah welcomed the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire but stressed the need to end ongoing attacks on Gaza, Syria, and Iran. He urged the United Nations Security Council to intervene and enforce a full ceasefire, allowing for the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Reflecting on his recent religious pilgrimage, Abdullah prayed for the unity and peace of Kashmir, the Muslim world, and for the end of religious hatred in India.

Rajasthan Passes Strict Anti-Conversion Bill with Jail Terms and Compensation

The Rajasthan Cabinet has approved a new anti-conversion bill, which imposes severe penalties, including jail terms of up to 10 years and a compensation of Rs.5 lakh for victims of forced religious conversion. The bill, titled the Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion, targets individuals or institutions using deceit, pressure, or coercion to force conversions. It specifies varying sentences based on the nature of the conversion, with penalties of 2 to 10 years and fines for converting minors, women, or individuals from Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). In cases of mass conversions, the punishment could extend to 10 years in prison and a ₹50,000 fine.

The law requires advance notice for conversions and mandates affidavits post-conversion, addressing concerns over fraudulent or coercive conversions.

The bill has drawn mixed reactions. BJP’s Ghanshyam Tiwari praised the bill as historic, while Congress’ Govind Singh Dotasara criticized it, citing existing laws. He accused the BJP of attempting to create divisions between Hindus and Muslims for political gains.

This bill follows similar legislation passed in other BJP-ruled states, including Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka. However, it comes amidst ongoing debates over whether such laws infringe on individual freedoms. Rajasthan’s move marks a significant development in the anti-conversion legal landscape within India.

Government and Opposition Near Agreement to End Parliament Deadlock, Discussions Set for Constitution

The deadlock in Parliament’s winter session may soon be resolved, with the government and opposition parties nearing an agreement. A key development involves the setting of dates for discussions on the Constitution, marking its 75th year since adoption. According to reports, these discussions will take place in the Lok Sabha on December 13 and 14, and in the Rajya Sabha on December 16 and 17.

In addition to the constitutional debate, the Samajwadi Party and TMC are expected to raise other issues like the Sambhal violence and developments in Bangladesh in the Lok Sabha.

While the opposition demands an official announcement of these dates before resuming regular parliamentary proceedings, sources suggest that there is optimism for the resumption of work in Parliament from Tuesday following positive discussions.

However, the opposition’s push for a dedicated debate on the Adani issue seems unlikely to be granted. The Congress has been vocal about the indictment of Adani Group chairperson Gautam Adani and other company officials over charges of bribery and fraud, but there is little chance of this matter being discussed in isolation. It may be raised as part of broader debates.

The Adani controversy, along with ongoing protests over incidents like the violence in Sambhal and the unrest in Manipur, have led to repeated adjournments since the session began on November 25. Despite these disruptions, some opposition parties, particularly the TMC, have focused less on the Adani row and are prioritizing other national issues, such as unemployment and rising prices.

The ruling BJP has countered by defending its handling of constitutional norms, contrasting it with the alleged mismanagement of such issues during Congress’ time in power.
