Sadhguru Voices Concern Over Arrest of Hindu Leader Chinmoy Krishna Das in Bangladesh

Prominent spiritual leader Sadhguru has expressed deep concern over the recent arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a Hindu priest and leader associated with ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness), in Bangladesh. Das was detained by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police on November 25, 2024, under unclear circumstances, igniting concerns within the Hindu community and beyond.

Chinmoy Krishna Das, also a spokesperson for Bangladesh’s Sanatan Jagaran Mancha, was reportedly arrested in connection with ongoing tensions and protests involving the rights of Hindus in Bangladesh. The incident has escalated due to the increasingly volatile situation for minorities in the country. Local reports indicated that he was arrested following a rally advocating for the protection of minority rights and the establishment of a tribunal to address anti-Hindu violence. The arrest comes amid widespread protests against the detention, with demonstrators rallying for his immediate release.

Sadhguru, known for his global influence and spiritual leadership, shared his concerns on social media, highlighting the urgency of safeguarding the rights of minorities. In his statement, he emphasized the importance of peace and mutual respect in the region. His comments add to growing international pressure on the Bangladeshi government to address the issue and ensure the safety and security of the Hindu community, which has faced increasing persecution in recent years.

As tensions mount, there is a growing call for international intervention to secure the release of Chinmoy Krishna Das and ensure the protection of religious freedoms in Bangladesh.

This case continues to highlight the delicate balance between religious freedoms and state control in Bangladesh, with global leaders like Sadhguru urging for peaceful resolutions to the ongoing crisis.

Andhra Pradesh Considers Scrapping Power Deal with Adani Group Amid US Bribery Charges

The Andhra Pradesh government is reviewing the possibility of canceling its power supply contract with the Adani Group following serious bribery allegations levied against the conglomerate. US authorities have indicted Gautam Adani, the founder of the Adani Group, and seven others for allegedly bribing Indian officials with $265 million to secure lucrative solar power contracts across several states, including Andhra Pradesh, between 2021 and 2022.

The charges, outlined in a US indictment, suggest that the Adani Group engaged in corrupt practices to influence Indian state electricity companies, with $228 million of the alleged bribes paid to officials in Andhra Pradesh. The power deals, said to be worth approximately seven gigawatts of solar energy, are among the largest in the country. However, the Adani Group has categorically denied the allegations, calling them baseless.

In response to the scandal, Andhra Pradesh’s Finance Minister Payyavula Keshav confirmed that the state government is reviewing all relevant files from the previous administration, which was in power during the period of the alleged misconduct. He added that the government is seriously evaluating the possibility of annulling the contract. “We will examine the possibilities, including canceling the contract,” Keshav told Reuters.

The controversy has already had significant financial repercussions for the Adani Group. Following the indictment, the company’s shares and bonds have experienced sharp declines, and major investors are reconsidering their positions. Total Energies halts investments in Adani Green amid bribery allegations, while the Andhra Pradesh government and SEC investigate further.

Deadline for Free Aadhaar Update Looms: Here’s What You Need to Know

With the deadline for free Aadhaar updates approaching on December 14, 2024, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has issued an urgent reminder for residents who received their Aadhaar cards over 10 years ago. Although the update is optional, UIDAI recommends updating details, especially for older cards, to ensure accurate authentication and better service delivery.

Aadhaar is a key identification document in India, linking a unique number to an individual’s biometric data. This prevents identity duplication, ensuring a secure system for accessing services across sectors like banking, healthcare, and government welfare programs. UIDAI’s latest gazette notification emphasizes that Aadhaar holders are entitled to update their information every 10 years by submitting proof of identity and address, reinforcing the importance of keeping these details current.

To make use of the free update option, residents must update their Aadhaar online through the myAadhaar portal. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Visit the myAadhaar portal and log in with your Aadhaar number and captcha code.
  2. Enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number and proceed to login.
  3. Click on ‘Document Update’ and select the details you wish to update (address, name, etc.).
  4. Upload the required documents (proof of identity and address) and submit the request.
  5. You will receive a Service Request Number (SRN) to track the status of your update.

For residents without valid address proof, UIDAI provides the option of an Address Validation Letter, a convenient way to complete the process.

Notably, after December 14, 2024, updating Aadhaar will incur a ₹50 fee per update. UIDAI encourages everyone to update their details before the deadline to avoid these charges.

As UIDAI stated, “Keeping your Aadhaar documents updated ensures ease of living, better service delivery, and accurate authentication.” Ensure you take advantage of this opportunity before the free update window closes.

Copper Futures Decline Amid Mixed Global Signals

New Delhi: Copper futures fell 0.33% to ₹804.65 per kilogram on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) on Tuesday as muted demand in the domestic market prompted speculators to cut positions. The December contract recorded a decline of ₹2.65 in a turnover of 8,369 lots. Analysts cite subdued industrial demand as the primary factor for the drop.

Globally, copper markets are navigating a complex landscape. Recent reports indicate a softening of demand in Western markets, but China’s continued appetite for the metal, particularly in the green energy and EV sectors, remains a critical driver. In 2024, China’s copper demand is expected to grow by 4.3%, bolstering the global consumption outlook.

However, this demand optimism is tempered by an anticipated 4.6% increase in global refined copper production, driven by capacity expansions in countries like China, India, and Indonesia. This production growth could lead to a surplus, putting downward pressure on prices in the medium term.

The London Metal Exchange (LME) has also seen copper prices rally in recent months, touching $9,739 per metric ton. However, analysts warn this surge may be “getting ahead of itself” as physical demand in major markets like China remains inconsistent.

In the short term, domestic traders are closely monitoring international trends, including the impact of a weaker U.S. dollar, which has made dollar-denominated commodities more attractive globally. Meanwhile, domestic industrial activity must recover significantly for local prices to stabilize.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), December silver contracts climbed ₹107, or 0.12%, to reach ₹87,806 per kilogram by midday trading. The uptick came as a result of fresh positions built by traders amid robust demand in the domestic and global markets.

Key Market Drivers

  1. Global Demand and Supply Trends: Increased industrial and investment demand continues to underpin silver’s performance. Globally, the metal traded higher at $31.02 per ounce, reflecting positive sentiment despite a stronger dollar and elevated U.S. Treasury yields.

Pilot Killed in Plane Crash While Transporting Rescue Dogs; Two Dogs Survive

A plane crash in New York’s Catskill Mountains has left pilot Seuk Kim, 49, and one rescue dog dead, while two other dogs survived with injuries. Kim was flying from Maryland to Albany on Sunday evening when his small aircraft went down in a remote, snow-covered area near Windham, about 35 miles southwest of Albany. Preliminary investigations indicate that Kim died on impact. The crash occurred after pilots reported poor visibility and turbulence, and rescuers discovered the wreckage late that night.

Kim, a resident of Springfield, Virginia, was transporting three dogs as part of a nonprofit initiative that uses volunteer pilots to relocate rescue animals from overcrowded shelters. Rescuers found Whiskey, a Labrador-mix puppy, who had suffered broken bones and was frightened, burrowed in the snow. The other, an 18-month-old Yorkshire terrier mix named Pluto, sustained minor injuries. Veterinary professionals took both animals to a hospital in Connecticut, where they are receiving care.

Tributes for Kim highlight his dedication to rescuing animals, with praise from Maggie Pryor and Cathay West for his life-saving efforts.

Originally from South Korea, Kim immigrated to the United States to build a meaningful life, his family stated. Known for his kindness and selflessness, he left a lasting legacy in the lives of those he helped, both human and animal.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash, which occurred amid challenging weather conditions. Kim had requested a change in altitude to avoid turbulence shortly before the incident. Rescuers found the wreckage, which lay two miles from the nearest road, surrounded by about a foot of snow. Authorities continue to examine the cause of this devastating accident.
