Eknath Shinde Resigns as Maharashtra CM; Race for Successor Intensifies

Eknath Shinde stepped down as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Tuesday following the decisive victory of the Mahayuti alliance in the recently concluded state assembly elections. After submitting his resignation to Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan requested Shinde to serve as caretaker CM until his successor takes office. This move comes amidst ongoing discussions over the leadership of Maharashtra following the strong performance of the BJP-led Mahayuti coalition in the state elections.

The Mahayuti coalition, consisting of the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction), secured a resounding majority, winning 230 out of 288 seats. However, the question of who will assume the chief ministerial role has sparked significant political debate.

A Tussle for Power:
The BJP, emerging as the single-largest party with 132 seats, is pushing for Devendra Fadnavis to take the top position. On the other hand, the Shiv Sena, which won 57 seats, is lobbying for Shinde to continue, citing his leadership as instrumental in the alliance’s electoral success. Sena leaders also pointed to a precedent set by the BJP’s arrangement in Bihar, where Nitish Kumar retained the CM role despite the BJP being the dominant coalition partner.

Supporters within the Shiv Sena, including senior leaders like Deepak Kesarkar and Naresh Mhaske, have publicly expressed their preference for Shinde, emphasizing that his leadership has bolstered the alliance’s performance. Meanwhile, Fadnavis’ supporters argue that the BJP’s electoral strength justifies his claim to the post.

Shinde Appeals for Calm:
Amid this leadership tussle, Shinde urged his followers not to stage demonstrations in his favor, highlighting the alliance’s unity. “We contested and won the elections as a grand alliance, and we will form the government as a united front,” Shinde stated, addressing his supporters via social media.

Shinde’s political journey gained prominence in 2022 when he broke away from Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership and took over the Shiv Sena with the support of 40 MLAs. His tenure as CM marked significant shifts in Maharashtra’s political landscape, particularly aligning with the BJP.

As discussions continue, the Mahayuti coalition is expected to soon make a unanimous decision on the leadership.

Shinde Asks Supporters to Refrain from Gathering at ‘Varsha’ Amid CM Speculations

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has called on his supporters to avoid gathering outside his official residence, ‘Varsha’, or any other location in his support. The plea comes amid growing speculation over who will assume the top position in the state after the BJP-led Mahayuti’s decisive victory in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections.

Shinde, in a post on social media platform X, thanked his supporters for their overwhelming love but requested that no one assemble in his support at ‘Varsha’ or elsewhere. He emphasized the unity of the Mahayuti alliance and reiterated that the government formation would be a collective decision, with no differences of opinion among the coalition partners. He also expressed gratitude for the people’s trust, stating that the focus of the new government would be on serving the common people, including women, children, and farmers.

Despite the Mahayuti securing a commanding 230 seats out of 288, the question of who will take the Chief Minister’s post remains unresolved. Supporters of Shinde argue that he should continue in office, citing his leadership during the election campaign. However, BJP leaders, including Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, are pushing for Fadnavis to become the CM for a third term.

Shiv Sena spokesperson Naresh Mhaske has compared the situation to the Bihar model, where the BJP allowed JD(U)’s Nitish Kumar to continue as CM despite the BJP’s greater seat share. Mhaske believes Shinde should retain the position, stressing that the Mahayuti’s senior leaders will ultimately make the final call.

While the decision remains pending, Shinde’s appeal to his supporters reflects an effort to maintain stability and avoid any unnecessary disruptions during the ongoing discussions about the leadership in Maharashtra.

BJP MLA Alleges Treachery: Accuses Party MLCs of Campaign Sabotage

In Maharashtra’s political sphere, BJP MLA Ram Satpute has accused senior party leaders of sabotaging his election campaign in Malshiras. He alleged that Ranjitsinh Mohite-Patil, a BJP MLC, misused funds allocated for his sugar factory to support opposition candidate Uttamrao Jankar, leading to Satpute’s defeat by a margin of 13,147 votes.

Satpute claimed, “Mohite-Patil diverted BJP resources for personal gains and hindered our campaign efforts. Such actions are unacceptable, and the party must expel him immediately.”

He also provided photographic evidence showing Mohite-Patil purportedly backing Jankar during rallies.

Simultaneously, BJP MLA Suresh Dhas criticized another party MLC, Pankaja Munde, accusing her of undermining the party’s unity. “Pankajatai, you were like a sister to me. However, your actions, including endorsing an independent candidate, were a betrayal,” said Dhas.

Munde, a former state minister, reportedly faced internal differences with the BJP, with some party members suggesting she has been distancing herself from key leadership, potentially signaling dissatisfaction with the party’s direction.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who allocated ₹113 crore for the sugar factory project, has not yet commented on the allegations. However, sources suggest that tensions within the BJP’s ranks could escalate if these claims are not addressed promptly.

The allegations come in the wake of the BJP’s dominant performance in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, where the Mahayuti alliance, including BJP and Shiv Sena, won 132 and 57 seats, respectively. Meanwhile, the opposition’s Sharad Pawar-led NCP secured just 10 seats, reflecting the BJP’s significant electoral gains.

This internal discord has prompted calls for disciplinary action against those accused of disloyalty. Analysts believe that resolving these issues swiftly is crucial for maintaining the BJP’s stronghold in Maharashtra.

BJP-Sena Rift Deepens as Maharashtra CM Post Hangs in Balance

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra political landscape remains turbulent as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena for the coveted chief minister position following the Mahayuti alliance’s resounding victory in the 2024 elections. While the BJP, the largest party with 132 seats, enjoys widespread support, Shiv Sena and its leader Eknath Shinde are pushing hard to retain the top post.

The Sena argues that Shinde’s leadership was instrumental in the alliance’s victory, citing his extensive campaigning and pivotal initiatives like the “Ladki Bahin Yojana,” a policy hailed as a game-changer by Deputy CM Ajit Pawar. On the other hand, the BJP, buoyed by PM Modi’s development-driven narrative, has yet to finalize its choice for the chief minister, with Devendra Fadnavis emerging as a strong contender.

Shinde loyalists invoke the “Bihar model,” where Nitish Kumar retained the CM position despite a smaller legislative presence, to advocate for Shinde. Sena MP Naresh Mhaske emphasized that public sentiment favors Shinde, stating, “Making Shindesaheb the CM is the wish of the people of Maharashtra.” However, BJP leaders, including Ram Shinde, have dismissed the Bihar formula, asserting the decision rests with senior alliance leaders.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged the alliance’s historic mandate, expressing gratitude to voters and reiterating a commitment to Maharashtra’s progress. Meanwhile, Ajit Pawar celebrated the Mahayuti’s victory as proof of trust in good governance, crediting Shinde’s policies for the alliance’s success. As BJP leaders deliberate, speculation grows about a potential compromise to balance alliance dynamics. The final decision will likely define the alliance’s stability and the state’s political trajectory.

The unfolding power tussle underscores the challenges of coalition politics, with both parties striving to uphold voter trust while safeguarding their interests.

Rashmi Shukla Reinstated as Maharashtra DGP Amid Political Criticism

In a controversial move, the Maharashtra government reinstated IPS officer Rashmi Shukla as the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) following the conclusion of the election code of conduct. This decision has sparked sharp criticism from opposition parties, who allege bias and procedural violations.

The Election Commission (EC) removed Shukla, a 1988-batch IPS officer known for her contentious tenure, earlier this month after Congress and other opposition parties filed complaints against her. They accused her of phone tapping and partisan behavior during her time heading the state intelligence department. Following her removal, Sanjay Kumar Verma served as interim DGP until Shukla’s reappointment on November 25, 2024.

Her reinstatement came after a reported meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also oversees the Home Department, raising concerns about a potential breach of the Model Code of Conduct. Congress spokesperson Atul Londhe condemned this meeting, stating, “The EC must act against such violations to ensure trust in the system.” Sharad Pawar of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) also criticized the government, alleging misuse of police machinery during elections.

The Election Commission clarified that the Model Code ended once the election results were declared, which paved the way for Shukla’s reappointment. However, opposition leaders have accused the EC of double standards, citing swift action in non-BJP-ruled states while allegedly overlooking violations in Maharashtra.

Controversies have riddled Shukla’s career, with authorities filing three FIRs against her in 2022 over allegations of unauthorized phone tapping. The BJP-led Mahayuti government later closed these cases after coming to power. Despite the backlash, Shukla has resumed her role, becoming Maharashtra’s first female DGP, marking a contentious new chapter in the state’s administration.

This reinstatement underscores ongoing tensions between state authorities and opposition parties, raising questions about governance and impartiality during politically sensitive times.
