Omar Abdullah Takes Oath as Jammu & Kashmir’s New Chief Minister

Srinagar: Omar Abdullah was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, marking his return to a role he previously held from 2009 to 2015. Abdullah, leader of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC), took the oath of office in a grand ceremony in Srinagar, attended by key political figures, dignitaries, and local leaders. His reinstatement comes at a time of heightened expectations from the people of the Union Territory, who are looking for solutions to long-standing issues, particularly after the region’s reorganization in 2019.

The swearing-in ceremony was a spectacle of political unity, with signatories from various parties and prominent figures attending to congratulate Abdullah. Among the notable attendees were Farooq Abdullah, his father and a seasoned political leader of J&K, along with Rahul Gandhi, leader of the Indian National Congress (INC), and Mehbooba Mufti of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Also in attendance were several regional leaders, representatives from trade unions, and members of civil society. This political congregation signaled a united call for peace, stability, and economic progress in the Union Territory.

As the new chief minister, Omar Abdullah faces several immediate and long-term challenges. First and foremost is the restoration of political stability in a region that has witnessed upheaval since the revocation of Article 370 and 35A in August 2019. Rebuilding trust with the people will be crucial, particularly in the context of ensuring that developmental projects address unemployment, infrastructure needs, and economic revitalization. Additionally, Abdullah’s government must navigate the complex issue of security, balancing counter-terrorism efforts while ensuring that local communities are not alienated.

His leadership will also be tested in managing relations with New Delhi, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) holds significant influence over J&K’s future. Furthermore, managing regional tensions between Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, ensuring equitable resource distribution, and addressing the concerns of minority groups, including Kashmiri Pandits, will require diplomatic and inclusive governance.

Omar Abdullah to Take Oath as J&K’s Chief Minister Today

SriNagar: After a decade without an elected government, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) is set to witness the swearing-in of Omar Abdullah as its Chief Minister today. This historic moment comes after the National Conference (NC) emerged victorious in the first Assembly elections held in the region since the abrogation of Article 370 and J&K’s transition into a Union Territory.

The swearing-in ceremony will be held at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar, where Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha will administer the oath to Omar Abdullah and his cabinet members at 11:30 AM. This event marks Abdullah’s second term as chief minister; his first stint was from 2009 to 2014 when J&K was still a state under an NC-Congress coalition government.

The NC has extended invitations to key leaders from the INDIA alliance, including Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and other prominent opposition figures like Sharad Pawar, Akhilesh Yadav, and Lalu Prasad Yadav. However, it remains unclear which leaders will attend the event.

Omar Abdullah’s return to the helm follows the National Conference’s decisive win in the recent polls, securing 42 of the 90 seats in the newly formed Assembly. Alongside its ally, Congress, which won six seats, the NC commands a majority in the 95-member assembly, bolstered by the support of five Independent MLAs-elect and one MLA-elect from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Adv Gunaratna Sadavarte Leaves Bigg Boss 18

Mumbai: Advocate Gunaratna Sadavarte, a contestant on Bigg Boss 18, made an unexpected exit from the show on October 14, 2024. His departure follows his absence from a critical legal hearing regarding the Maratha reservation case in the Bombay High Court, a case that has garnered significant attention in Maharashtra.

According to sources, Sadavarte missed his court appearance due to his commitment to the reality show, which led to the judges expressing their displeasure. The court had been hearing multiple petitions related to the controversial Maratha reservation issue, a legal matter that Sadavarte, along with his wife, Jaishri Patil, had been actively challenging.

On the day of the missed hearing, the bench took note of Sadavarte’s absence, and when informed about his involvement in Bigg Boss, the Chief Justice remarked with frustration, stating, “He is enjoying better company there.” The court has now scheduled the next hearing for November 19, during which Maharashtra’s Advocate General will present the government’s case.

Sadavarte’s wife and legal team reportedly decided to pull him out of the Bigg Boss house to focus on the ongoing case. While his team has suggested that the advocate could return to the show, no final decision has been made by the show’s producers. Sadavarte had gained popularity on the show for his unique style of speaking and witty remarks, which even host Salman Khan had acknowledged during the Weekend Ka Vaar episodes.

DPIIT Eases Compliance Norms for Cookware, Utensils Industries

New Delhi: In a significant move to enhance the ease of doing business, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has announced relaxations in the Quality Control Order (QCO) 2024 for cookware, utensils, and cans used in food and beverages. This initiative aims to improve the quality ecosystem in India, attract investments, and support entrepreneurial talent.

One of the key relaxations includes exempting very small micro-enterprises—those registered under the Udyam portal with investments in plant and machinery below ₹25 lakhs and annual turnover not exceeding ₹2 crores—from compliance with the QCO. Additionally, a six-month grace period has been introduced to allow businesses to clear legacy stock. Another noteworthy change is the exemption for importing up to 200 units of cookware and cans intended for research and development purpose.

The QCO, originally notified on August 10, 2023, established five Indian Standards for the products, but its implementation has been extended to address industry concerns. The updated timelines specify that large and medium-sized manufacturers will need to comply by April 1, 2025, while small enterprises will have until July 1, 2025, and micro-enterprises until October 1, 2025.

The revised QCO also reflects India’s commitment to achieving self-reliance in manufacturing and enhancing product quality. Compliance with these standards is expected to bolster consumer trust and establish India as a manufacturing hub for premium quality goods, benefiting both domestic and international markets.
